This week...

*Jackson shared his me bag as student of the week
*In math Mrs.randall taught us how the us algorithm works and connected it to breaking numbers apart in place value. Using expanded notation is helpful.

*In second step we focused on strong Emotions.

*In readers workshop we focused on,Girls Education. We reviewed what we learned about monitoring our comprehension.

*In our class room there was a mouse in our recycling bin!!!! ## mice are cute.

*Owen brought in a fun game to share.

* In writing we are focused on how to read through the lens of a writer. We ask specific questions of the text. For example, what does the author want us to know about this?

*We invited Mrs. pack's class in so we could hold a writing conference and teach them about how to create cool strikes on Storybird. We each have a first grade buddy to guide all year!

*In our reading letters, we are making statements about one character from our book and backing it up with evidence from the text. We are keeping track of the character's thoughts, actions, words, and what others think about them.

*The book Fox, is one of our mentor text in writing. We read and discussed why the author might have made the choices they did.

*Isabelle completed multiplication in Fastt Math!! We had a fun dance party to celebrate!

*In math, we had a family challenge to create a tutorial video for a third grader showing how to solve an addition equation using different strategies that are efficient and effective. We used the app Educreations!

*In science, we researched questions about gravity and what happens on the other side of the Earth when we have day. We read a cool book called Gravity by Jason Chin.

*Many students are giving book talks!

* One reading group focused on a news article on how to handle bullying. They created a poster and will share it on Tuesday during all-school meeting.

*Mrs. Randall finally got her projector! We are excited!

*Did you know there are 10 rows of 1,000 in 10,000? We created a large visual to understand large numbers. We use it as a resource.

*We worked hard over the last week on Sumdog!! Our hard work paid off!! We won the chittenden county math competition!!! Our next competition will be before Thanksgiving break.

## Mrs.randall is awesome

Ask us about this book!! What do you do with an idea?

An informative Skype with Ms. Fary's science class at CHMS
PAWS celebration-a Halloween web hunt!

Week of October 20, 2014

Owen and porter are reading quietly and recording their thoughts. After we lift one of our thoughts to use as the focus of our writing (the A of our ABC paragraph). Then we pull evidence from the text to show the audience (B-back up our statement). Lastly, we give our thoughts to show the importance, or so what? (C-commentary).

Author's Chair!!

Cooper reading his piece on national writing day today

We were Skyping people that live in San Antonio, Texas! It was a mystery skype. We have been discussing our read aloud text on Edmodo with them. They told us the weather was in the high 80s and their school has air conditioning!

People are coming up to answer our questions for the skype.

We just created an account on story bird. We all have diferent personalities and story starters. We choose cool pieces of art to inspire our stories.

# story bird is awesome!

Miranda finished multiplication on Fastt Math! Great job working hard Miranda!! Mrs. Randall danced on her desk. It was so fun!

We read a book called jungle bullies and it taught you about bullying and how you can make change.

The fourth grade gathered to share our presentations about our LCMM field trip. Each class presented their experience and data. It was cool that we were such good fisherman! Each class caught cool fish, dropped the secchi disk to check water clarity, we fished for plankton and looked under microscopes, underwater exploration, used a clear way to gather artifacts from the bottom of the lake, and explored the museum buildings. We shared some cool images from CHMS -they have really sharp microscopes that take images and video.

Four Winds lesson today! We learned more about the sun, why we have day and night, why we have seasons, and how we have a shadow.

We made predictions and gathered data after our investigation.

In writers workshop, our mini lesson focused on word choice. We generated many new words in our writers notebook-spicy and bland words. Mrs. Randall surprised us with some hot and spicy chips we ate when we found spicy words and plain rice cakes when we said a bland word.

Yummy words!!

After, we added more words into our quick word and tried some out in own writing.

Mrs. Randall signed us up for a math competition! We can't wait! It starts tomorrow. We had time to practice and show our skills. We are using the website-Sumdog.

We each work at our own skill level on this site and it progresses when we do well.

We are working on the website Sumdog and we are doing a math contest competing the world.

For Andrews celabration we wacthed a space shuttle video on Nasa.

Working quietly while reading.

Finding evidence from the text to back up our thinking.

Today's pod was pretty tough, but we worked through it! Using a table helped us notice the patterns.

Greta was student of the week and shared her me bag. Jackson is next week!

We posted on Edmodo-in our class group we discussed the newest Nobel prize winner. In our global read aloud group, we discussed inspiration and creativity.

We submitted our names to NASA so that our names will go to Mars!

We played the game close to 1,000 using strategies -place value.

Owen is leading the discussion for weekly reader. The pie chart below shows how people voted for our debate.

Weekly Reader-digital version.

Week of Oct. 13, 2014

HHave you watched our Animoto we posted on Monday? It was so fun! We went on a scavenger hunt and wrote poems about how it feels to belong in fourth grade.
Owen was our guest reader on Tuesday. We gathered some quotes from the book.

Quotes we like from our read aloud text;

"The most powerful tool of the scientist is observation" Pg. 47

" Scientists never give up. They keep trying because they believe in the possible."

"Average people just give up at the obstacles we face every day. Scientist fail again and again and again sometimes our whole lives but we don't give up because we want to solve the puzzle."

We just had a mystery skype!!!!! Our new friends are in New Jersey!

Our Vermont maps are almost complete! Next week we will focus on understanding where the 14 counties are located and why each has a shire town. Do you know?

Quotes from trip to mt.philo;

You can do it!

Have you broken a sweat yet mrs.Randall?

We learned about how to join in. Here are some tips-stand nearby, watch and listen. Give a compliment, ask a question, or offer help. Assertively ask to join in.

This is an example of some groups practicing.

Did you know that some of us are programming during math menu? Ask us to show you what we've created on Khan Academy!!

Some of us are using an app called Educreations to create how to videos in math!

Ask us about our avatars! We earn them when we persevere on challenging math concepts on Khan Academy. This is what Adain just earned! He was very excited! :)

Have a great long weekend! See you Monday!
