Week of September 30

Happy Monday!

Today was exciting because we had a blast painting our author's chair, footstool and listening center! Here are some pictures of our creativity! Thank you Mrs. Adams!

We also started our Global Read Aloud Project! Mrs. Randall showed us two book trailers to start our discussion and we will be posting with our new friends around the world on Edmodo! The new book is called Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. It is written from the pint of view of an eleven year old girl named Melody. Imagine if you were brilliant, had so much to say, yet could speak ans express yourself. Imagine how frustrating that would be!

We took our end-of-unit math test on multiplication and using arrays to model our thinking.

Tuesday!

Today, after all-school morning meeting, we participated in the cardboard challenge! We worked together with a small group to create a game out of cardboard. Check out some of our creations below! Our museum walk will be on Friday.

Some of our ideas are;

Lots of good and fantastic ideas!

Kids are really getting in to the cardboard way!

There are lots of music themed games like the 2nd and 4th pics

The 2nd pic is Emma and Maddy's

The 4th is Caitlyn and Julia

Our Jam Master chose a fun dance jam!

In math, we are using visual models to support our thinking while solving multiplication equations.

Wonderful Wednesday!

Today we worked on a problem with Mrs. Randall! She had to figure out how many kilometers she drove. We acted out the problem and created a diagram to help us see a mini-map of her travels!

As readers, we are continuing to build our reading stamina and reflect on our reading by using our independent reading rubric. Some of us are working with Mrs. Randall it learn how to back up our thinking with evidence from the text. Our focus is how readers can find the big idea, and use it to deepen their understanding. We are writing Mrs. Randall reading letters about the big idea of the chapter we are reading.

We are starting our new math unit! It connects to unit 1 because we are using what we know in multiplication, to solve bigger number equations.
Mathematicians talk about this math thinking.
We did another mystery Skype and met some new friends in Cosa Mesa, California. It is in Orange County. We talked about our read aloud text. We will write about the book on Edmodo and Skype again next week.
This is an image of their city.
We had fun playing our cardboard challenge games. On Friday we took a tour of other creations in the school.
This student shared a book talk during morning meeting. He learned a lot about trains.

Sydney was our student of the week! She brought in her "me" bag to share with us.
Mrs. Randall read us a book about a young boy who was learning how to ride his bike. He was showing persistence. We made a chart with our definition and when we would use this habit of mind to show positive self-talk.
This is a brainstorm of our thoughts.

We played a fun math game called big array small array. We kept track of our arrays!
In readers workshop, we worked in a small group with Mrs. Randall to find the big idea of the chapter we are reading in our independent books. We lifted a piece of evidence from the text to support the big idea and then we shared why this was important.
This week's discussion was an interesting one! There is a lot going on in the news!
We also wrote our first post on Edmodo! Ask one of us to see the group we created with our friends from Wisconsin and California!

Happy Friday!

Jack and Ryan
